Gear for Deer Incorporated was officially founded in the Fall of 2025 although its roots extend back to August of 2024. Taking hold through the generosity of the Youngwood Sportsmen's Association, Gear for Deer was able to outfit 14 hunters between the ages of 12-16 in 2025 and has quadrupled that number to 57 in 2026. The momentum we are gathering is helping us to expand rapidly in southwestern Pennsylvania and to set our sights on being represented in each of Pennsylvania's 67 counties.

Woody's Mission
It is the mission of the Gear for Deer program to provide hunting apparel for new hunters to the sport in an effort to encourage them and their adult mentors to actively pursue game in comfort and safety.
Seasons and ever-changing hunting conditions necessitate flexibility in choosing the right gear for the right hunt. For a family new to hunting, the expense can be overwhelming and intimidating. Gear for Deer aims to lessen that burden and allow families to concentrate on the hunt itself.

FundraisingAffiliate Members
An Affiliate Member is a sportsmen's club/association that supports the Gear for Deer program. There no fee to become an Affiliate Member. An Affiliate Member club agrees to conduct at least one (1) hunter trapper education (HTE) course each year and host one (1) annual fundraiser dedicated to the Gear for Deer program. Gear for Deer uses the HTE rosters from Affiliates to send letters of invitation to parents to participate in the program.

How it worksQualifying for Gear
The qualifications to participate in Gear for Deer are quite simple. First, the new hunter must successfully complete an approved HTE class at an Affiliate Member club/sight. Second, the successful student must purchase a hunting license for the licensure year. There will be a deadline to respond to be outfitted detailed in a letter or email to parents as well as distribution instructions.

The coordinators of the program will send out invitations for the program and will request clothing sizes for the following apparel:
- Boots, pants, shirt, jacket/outerwear, gloves, socks, orange vest, orange hat, and more as funding allows - Dunham's Sporting Goods in Latrobe, PA has been generous enough to help us secure the gear. |
