Woody's Mission

It is the mission of the Gear for Deer program to provide hunting apparel for new hunters to the sport in an effort to encourage them and their adult mentors to actively pursue game in comfort and safety.

WHITETAIL DEER

It is every PA hunter's dream to pursue our state animal. Preseason scouting and the right gear increase success!

Upland Bird Hunting

Precision, stamina and discipline are required by both hunter and hound alike in pursuit of pheasants, grouse, woodcock, and even antler sheds!

Eastern Wild Turkey

Few experiences can top hearing the thunder of a gobble in the spring!  Proper gear, proper identification and nerves of steel add to a memorable experience. The ultimate calling and  hunting experience!
Seasons and ever-changing hunting conditions necessitate flexibility in choosing the right gear for the right hunt.  For a family new to hunting, the expense can be overwhelming and intimidating.  Gear for Deer aims to lessen that burden and allow families to concentrate on the hunt itself.

Second Amendment Jamboree

The Second Amendment Jamboree was a massive success for Gear for Deer.  An additional $1200+ was raised to benefit this program.  That is 5 new hunters outfitted in just a few hours!

Fundraising

Gear for Deer and YSA
In its inaugural year (2025), Gear for Deer was approved by Youngwood Sportsmen's Association to raise funds for this cause.  Organized by two of its members, Deer for Gear quickly became the passion of the club!  To donate, you may send a charitable contribution to YSA and designate it for "Gear for Deer."

How it works

Qualifying for Gear
The focus for 2025 is to raise funds for those Pennsylvania Junior Resident Hunters who have successfully completed their HTE course AND who have purchased a valid hunting license in PA for the 2025-26 licensure year.  As this is a pilot program before it is widely expanded, students who have completed the in-person HTE course at YSA in 2025 are eligible.  Once this year is under our belt, additional clubs will be added to the list.

what hunters receive

The Gear
The coordinators of the program will send out invitations for the program and will request clothing sizes for the following apparel:
- Boots, pants, shirt, jacket/outerwear, gloves, socks, orange vest, orange hat, and more as funding allows
- Dunham's Sporting Goods in Latrobe, PA has been generous enough  to help us secure the gear.

2026 -27 fundraisers Are Underway

After an extremely positive first year that exceeded expectations, we are now working feverishly  for the 2026-27 campaign year.  Currently, we have another PA lottery-style ticket set for Thanksgiving.  For a $5 donation, you receive a ticket for the evening pick 3 number and a chance to win $1500 cash!  Who couldn't use $1500 for Black Friday purchasing power!

There are still tickets available.  If you would like to purchase tickets, please email us at [email protected] and we can make arrangements.  We also plan to be at Dunham's Sporting Goods at the Latrobe 30 Plaza again on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
